Hi,
I know the manuals say you need specialist equipment to create a hydraulic lock to fix the point of injection to time these DPA pumps properly, but I've never seen it done.
These pumps are driven by a quill shaft with a master spline so its difficult to get it wrong.
The master spline always lines up with the delivery valve which is receiving the injection and there is a scribe mark on the seal housing indicating the point of injection for No. 1 cyl. These then coincide with the master spline location.
Looking from the drive end of the pump you'll find the mark at 10 to the hour on 4 cyl. engines and 27 past for 6 cyl. engines.
No.1 Point of injection marks.
If the pump has been fitted to the engine before all that is needed is to line up the marks on the pump flange and gear housing and lock up the three 1/2 AF - 13mm. nuts.
One mm. of rotation of the pump body at these marks represents about one degree at the crankshaft.

On a new engine the pumps are individualy fitted before the timing marks are scribed so they are a matched pair.
If you have to fit a strange pump, and the engine doesn't perform, it is possible to reset these timing marks visualy.
To do this you will need to set the engine up at point of injection No.1, and remove the inspection plate from the side of the pump, (two 5/16 AF set screws). You will then be able to see the pump rotor which will have lettered scribe marks on it and a large circlip with one square end.
Slacken the pump boddy and turn it till the square end of the circlip lines up with the scribe mark on the rotor. The mark is lettered A on 4 cyl engines and D on 6 cyl.
Lock up the pump in that position and make your own new timing mark on the pump flange, a sharp chisel does the job nicely.

Sep 17, 2009 Somehow when you lined up the dots on the timing set you was off one. When I built my engine the #1 piston was all the way up, the timing marks on the balancer were lined up, the lifters for cylinder 1 were all the way down, and the dots lined up on the timing chain. You wouldn't have to move the crank but a few degrees to be off a tooth. See what the timing marks are supposed to look like for the injector pump, camshaft, crank, and idler gear on a Perkins 4.236 Diesel Engine in HD. Jan 23, 2014 We’ve had a query about aligning the letter G against the circlip mark when timing the fuel injection pump on the 23C engine. Bob has followed the 23C Engine Rebuild DVD and notes that on the DVD it shows the circlip mark on the lower side of the clip gap. However, Bob’s tractor has the circlip mark on the hole above the circlip gap. Nov 04, 2010 achieved by measuring the static timing. Remove the timing indicator. Install the plug. If you are planning to remove the injector pump from your tractor there are a few things that will make this job a lot easier. At the bottom of the page you will find links to downloadable instructions for your brand. If you do not see your brand let us know and we will put the link up for you.
This pertains to mainly Farm Tractors
Some Diesel Injection Pumps do need to be timed before they are removed some it is not necessary to have them in time. Stanadyne and Roosa Master it will make the installation a lot easier if they are in time when they are removed.
First find the make and the model of your pump and then read below for that application.
Remember anytime that any fuel lines are open you are subject to getting dirt in your system, keep the work area clean and the lines capped or sealed when working on your system
4.6 Ford Timing Marks
Stanadyne/Roosa Master DB and JDB Pumps These pumps will have a small rectangular or sometimes a triangle shaped plate on the side it will require a screw driver, or a 1/4 inch wrench to remove 2 screws. when these are removed you will see 2 disc inside of the pump, there should be a line visible in the rear of the window, rotate the engine by hand(do not use the starter) until you see a second line come into the window. (You may have to turn the engine over close to 2 times before the second mark becomes visible). when these 2 lines meet you are in time proceed to remove the pump.
Chevy Timing Marks 4.3
CAV, ROTO DIESEL, DPA style pumps found on Ford, John Deere, Massey Ferguson English made International tractors and many Perkins Engines it is not necessary to look in the pump for an internal mark. these pumps usually have a hub drive and due to a dowel pin in the drive gear the hub will only attach one way. The MF 3&4 cylinder Perkins link at the bottom will describe this well. It is a good idea to scribe a line on the mounting flange of the pump and the timing gear cover to allow you to line the housing back to the same location it is in.
Here are some tips for various models that may help you to remove your own injection pump If you need info on a unit that is not listed let us know we will try to post it.
